MVISD says a BIG Thank You to Landmark Inn

MVISD would like to sincerely thank the Landmark Inn for the amazing photo of the dam.  We utilize this wonderful photo as the wallpaper on our website.  This picture represents a long history in the town of Castroville, TX.  Below you will find some interesting history about this small dam:

The Medina River dam at the Landmark Inn was built in 1854 by Laurent Quintle and George L. Haass to provide water power for their gristmill two hundred yards downstream.  The original dam was constructed of limestone blocks and cypress beams, but concrete was added later to provide additional strength.  A gate mechanism behind the dam can be opened to let water flow downhill into an underground raceway tunnel until it reaches the gristmill.  There the swift water has enough power to turn a large waterwheel, which provides mechanical power for the machinery inside the mill.  The gristmill was used to grind corn and wheat into cornmeal and flour, which was then used to make bread.
