High School - Floral Design, making the world beautiful!

The newest program at MVHS has been brightening up every corner of the high school campus this year!  Floral Design was introduced as a part of the Career and Technology Department (CTE) as an elective, and Fine Arts credit, available to students starting during the 2014-2015 school year.  In this course, students have the opportunity to not only learn about many aspects of business and design, but also have the opportunity to create multiple floral designs for their own enjoyment.  During the course, students are able to create their own Homecoming Mum, round centerpiece, bud vase, seasonal Christmas arrangement, symmetrical triangle arrangement, prom corsage and boutonnière, mixed floral vase arrangement, hand-tied wedding bouquet and a dressed potted plant using both fresh and silk floral material.  Creating these designs is an excellent hands-on way of teaching students the Principles and Elements of design and how to handle and care for fresh floral materials.  Floral Design teacher, Callie Riff says there has been an incredible response to the program and she hopes it continues to grow in years to come.  She went on to say, "Teaching art is fun enough, but when you get to do it with a hands-on material like beautiful fresh flowers, it becomes not only more real for the students, but even more exciting to participate in as an educator.  My students look forward to our lab days and it is amazing to see how creative and talented they are!"

In April, Mrs. Riff will travel to James Madison High School with 20 students to participate in the Texas State Florist Association High School Certification Exam.  This certification will help students gain entry-level positions in a floral shop, retail shop or floral wholesaler.
